DV Awareness Month
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
How big of a problem is domestic violence? According to the US Department of Justice, four women are murdered each day by an intimate partner. In the United States, it is estimated that a woman is beaten every 9 seconds.
Studies suggest that between 3.3 and 10 million children are exposed to domestic violence annually.
Fortunately domestic violence is a social problem that can be solved. Sheltering Wings is here to help the victims of domestic abuse 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. But that's only part of our mission.
During October and throughout the rest of the year, we help the community better understand domestic abuse, how it affects children, and what we can all do to bring it to an end. We hope you'll join us in this critically important effort!
Sheltering Wings Goals for October 2008
We'd like to accomplish three objectives...
- Reach the victim with information about how domestic violence affects their children.
- Reach victims support systems about how domestic violence hurts children.
- Make a change in Hendricks County so the children are protected.
Help Spread The Word!
- Knowledge is power, so our staff and volunteers will be flooding bookstores, restaurants, libraries, doctors offices and more with safety cards and victim's brochures that give those in abusive relationships the resources they need. If you know a business or church that would display our safety cards, please call us.
- Clergy Training September 2th, 7pm at the Senior Center in Danville. Our community churches are a vital part of the solution. This year's theme is Teen Dating Violence-the role of the church.
- Pair Up: Women and Girls Ending Teen Dating Abuse will occur September 25th, 5pm to 9pm at Serendipity @ Metropolis.
- Remembering those who took the courageous step. Once again we will display t-shirts in our community, each one representing one of the children who came to us and received services to help them heal from the abuse they witnessed.
