Emergency

Providing crisis intervention to women and children fleeing all forms of domestic abuse is a central element of Sheltering Wings. Our focus in this area is to immediately provide safety for the woman and her children, and assess any critical needs.

Crisis Calls

Staff members with specialized training are on hand 24 hours a day to take calls from women in danger. Standardized assessments are used to gauge the degree of danger to the woman and any children, so that the staff members can recommend the appropriate course of action. When necessary, the staff members will contact law enforcement for help. Our 24-hour crisis call line can be accessed at (317) 745-1496.

Initial Intake

Upon arrival, a mentor guides the woman to her assigned room, which his stocked with personal hygiene items and basic necessities. Next, the mentor provides a tour of the facility, pointing out the safety features so that she and her children feel safe.

Complete Assessment

After a night of rest, a case manager assesses the woman's needs for transportation, parenting, education, employment, health and nutrition, family relations, substance use, child development, spiritual referrals to churches (when requested), protective order information and any other needed support systems. The case manager also determines whether the woman qualifies for state and federal assistance programs.

Children's Services

If the woman has children, the children's coordinator will assess the children and begin plans for future needs.

Security Systems

Access to the facility both in-person and by telephone is limited and controlled by redundant safety mechanisms. We never reveal who is (or who is not) residing with us, because we never really know whether a caller is legitimate.
