Victim's Services

Once the initial crisis has passed, we use a variety of other programs to address the next step in the process: helping women prepare for a return to a safe, secure life outside the shelter. Central to that is the development and strengthening of essential life skills required to successfully parent children, find financial freedom, cope with the daily stress of starting a new life, recognize the signs of harm in future relationships, and find appropriate legal representation.

Educational Classes

Classes build knowledge on practical issues related to domestic violence, health and wellness, child development and parenting, budgeting and money management, stress management and safety planning.

Job Skills Training and Career Counseling are offered to women who need help developing skills necessary to finding employment. Sheltering Wings collaborates with the Hendricks County College Network through Purdue University Cooperative Extension to provide classes and career counseling.

Computer classes are offered onsite to those wanting tutoring and classes to use specific computer programs or simply setting up an email account.

Parenting Skills Training helps mothers learn how to discipline children without spanking and yelling. Classes are taught using Dr. Leman's "Making Children Mind Without Losing Yours."

Stress Management classes are opportunities for women to relax and learn how to cope with the stress. This can be times for crafts, Bible study, or "ladies night out."

Budgeting Classes and Credit Counseling is available for women who need help with money matters. Professional organizations and local banks volunteer to help women create family budgets, get out of debt, and set up bank accounts.
