Our Kitchen Renovation
In many homes, the kitchen is the center of daily life. It’s where meals are prepared, chores are performed, and conversations and laughter are shared. The same is true at Sheltering Wings, where the kitchen is a gathering place for the women and children who call the domestic violence center home.
Now Sheltering Wings is upgrading its kitchen to make it more efficient, easier to clean, and better suited for health and nutrition classes. We’re also adding a commercial dishwasher to keep up with the busy pace and ensure proper sanitation. During the project, normal meal preparation will be interrupted, so the staff is looking to the community for a little extra help.
“The remodeling requires that we shut the kitchen down for a few weeks,” says Executive Director Cassie Martin. “That means we’ll have to set up a temporary cafeteria for the residents, with changes to our menus. We count on community residents to keep us stocked with food, but our needs are changing during the project.”
During the remodeling, Sheltering Wings will only be able to accept a limited number of food items. Community residents who wish to donate food and supplies are asked to bring only the following items: lunch meat, bagged salad, dry drink mixes like Kool-Aid and Crystal Light, coffee and coffee supplies, and bottled water. “In addition, because we’ll have a limited ability to wash dishes, we need paper plates, napkins, cups, and plastic silver,” Martin added.
In addition to food donations, Sheltering Wings is encouraging companies and community groups to sign up to provide meals to residents, or to make donations for the kitchen project. For more information and answers to questions, contact Donita Roberts at email@example.com or 317-386-5062.
